The upstream linked bug is still open, though, so maybe I'm not hitting
the same exact error condition. In that case, please attach an smb.conf
that reproduces the error.

I'll let Thomas Ward (@teward) chime in, but to me this looks like a
wishlist item at the moment.
Initially I even thought it would be a big departure from the debian
base package, but looks like ubuntu already builds a different set of
binary packages.
