I might not be 100% accurate and everyone is free to correct me... but
here's the main idea:
The purpose is to avoid API and ABI breakage between your program and
the library if there is a major .
Your package should actually only have build-depends to libldap2-dev in
the debian/control file, and
(as root):
- backup your /etc/init.d/nut
- overwrite it with the attachment
- reboot your computer and send us back /tmp/mge-utalk.log for investigation
- restore everything and reboot

Using a fresh install of karmic (grub2 only on host)
I had to manually apply the patch made by Colin Watson (comment #4) and
it almost worked...
First question, why is this patch not yet included in an updated package
of vmbuilder ?
Second, I encountered the same problem as Iain Allan (comment #
virtualization was disabled in the BIOS (default settings):
kernel: [ 476.938973] kvm: disabled by bios
I think this is what caused the problem, closing...

the solution Martin has proposed can only be considered as a temporary local
fix (ie on your boxes but not for an upload) for affected users, for the
reason I mentioned in the Debian bug linked.

it's not NUT by itself (meaning upsd) but the megatec_usb driver.
so upsd waits for it to be available.
this behavior has been fixed in NUT trunk, and this fix will be
available in NUT 2.4.
the loss/restoration of connexion has also been improved...
