I agree with Shane. Desktop users are far more likely to install the
official tools anyway. It's people using servers (in our case, an ESX
cluster) where the open vm tools become very useful.

You used to be able to work around this "--no-install-recommends", but
as of 11.10 that no longer works. It's no longer possible to install
open-vm-tools without also installing x11.
I think this deserves to be upgraded to bug, rather than "wishlist".
