Sorry - I don't know. This is a new backup protocol following two bad
experiences with tape mechanisms, so I have only been doing it for a
couple of months, and only on this version.
If there is still a gutsy box around at work I will try the test script
on that next week.

Chuck - see the upload.
The test script (called test) first uses the netbios name redirecting
its output to the file ntserver3, then uses the IP address redirecting
its output to file IP91.249. I ran it three times.
The netbios calls all worked as I would expect, and as you can see on

nothing in /var/log/samba. Smb.conf log level says it is for logging
samba server errors, and I'm only using the client. Have I been looking
at the wrong config file (I can't see one for smbclient) or is there a
log file elsewhere
Sorry for the delay - day job intruded.
The server event log has nothing near the time in question, and nothing I can
relate to Access Denied.

Assuming 'this' is the Access Denied issue...
I will check the server event log in the morning. The backup concerned is
multi-gigabyte and takes nearly five hours. Needless to say it runs overnight.
I will run it tomorrow with debug level 3 assuming my aged memory cells

To check consistency
The smbclient -L test consistently gives an error message when addressing my
server by its IP address. I will open this as a separate bug.
To avoid red herrings, my /etc/hosts file did not have an entry for the server.
Access by name used a name resolution service.

I routinely use its IP address when accessing this server from my Ubuntu

I ran the smbclient -L test twice - once in each mode. I did this in a

results.
