The issue indeed was not with bind9. It turns out that, for some
unexplained reasons, the process of installing the php5-imap package
screwd up the permissions of /etc/bind/rndc.key, which was not readable
anymore. Once fixed the file permissions, bind9 restarted smoothly.

reassigning package as this seems to be a bug caused by the 'wl' driver.
Could some people provide feedback of which version of LRM and which
kernel was being used at the time? There are two versions of 'wl' out
there right now.
