Worked on the second attempt, but cancels the whole do-release-upgrade,
which is quite nasty.

strange. PIDFILE in /etc/init.d/spamassassin was as delivered in
package. however in /etc/default/spamassassin a different one was
specified. after setting it to the same file it now works. thanks.
