Well as you set before a lot has change, I don't use ubuntu 8.10 anymore now I
use 10.10 and and so far everiting is perfect, at least for me.

Hold on! I found the reason why smbd dies: I found in the logs that the
declared guest account did not exist. When corrected to an existing account
smbd starts ok.
