Hi Darryl, it looks like you removed the main mysql config file,
/etc/mysql/my.cnf. That may be the cause of your problems.
Also:

.../mysql-server-5.1_5.1.63-0ubuntu0.10.04.1_i386.deb) ...

...fail!
