If you're going to use 'ctrl-a A' to rename your window, you'll need to
enclose it in double quotes, foo bar.
If you use Byobu's hotkey (F8) for rename-window, you don't need to
enclose it in quotes.

The problem with the F-keys is that Byobu's binding of them makes it
somewhat difficult to use Midnight Commander... hence why I prefer the
