Public bug reported: After the latest automatic update, exim4 was left not running.
/var/log/apt/history.log includes: Start-Date: 2016-03-16 06:27:04 Upgrade: exim4-base:amd64 (4.82-3ubuntu2, 4.82-3ubuntu2.1), exim4:amd64 (4.82-3ubuntu2, 4.82-3ubuntu2.1), exim4-daemon-heavy:amd64 (4.82-3ubuntu2, 4.82-3ubuntu2.1), exim4-config:amd64 (4.82-3ubuntu2, 4.82-3ubuntu2.1) Error: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) End-Date: 2016-03-16 06:27:06 I suspect this is because I have my own exim4 configuration file and the update is trying to modify the configuration. Also note this: # dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config /usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: exim4-config is broken or not fully installed Leaving exim4 stopped in this case is far from ideal, the SMTP server was down for ten hours while I was asleep before I noticed the problem. As far as I understand it, having your own exim configuration file is a supported system and should not be a cause for an update failure like this.
