Hello
Yes, I am a complete failure as a Linux maintainer... ;-) on the newly
installed system I immediately spotted the problem (colision with
another package not showing in the previous system probably because of
further corruption) and confirm that after purge you can re-install
dovecot-postfix.
Hi, Rolf, it does re-install after purge but doesn,t work any more.
There is nothing else running on this brand-new install and everything
points to corruption. A port scan with netstat gave nothing on that
particular port. I am doing a fresh install, will keep you posted, this
is all too confusing
Antonio, thank you for providing more information. FWIW, dovecot-common
installs, deinstalls and reinstalls just fine here in a lucid system.
Are you sure there is not another MTA running on your system? Maybe

Hello
This is most certainly an issue, if you remove dovecot-postfix in Lucid
server you cannot install it properly again.
Installation ends with the message:
* Restarting IMAP/POP3 mail server dovecot
Fatal: listen(0.0.0.0, 2000) failed: Address already in use
even using apt-get --purge remove
Without further information I will assume that this is no longer an
issue. Please feel free to reopen the ticket if you still experience
this problem.

I have managed to get around this problem. It appears to be due to the
presence/non-presence of some directories and files.
I made sure the following were present:
/var/run/dovecot/login
/var/run/dovecot/login
/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf
I was then able to reinstall dovecot-common
There is a bug 2
