It seemed to be the UsePAM setting that made it.
When UsePAM is returned to the default 'yes' everything is fine.
For some reason (a tutorial on slicehost.com :-)) I set the UsePAM to 'no'
without knowing why.
Maybe this isn't the right place to explain why that happened but if
anyone would like

I made the same change here on my Ubuntu 8,10 Intrepid x64 desktop.
It made no difference at all, motd info including the landscape-sysinfo
output is always displayed after login.

Strange.
I just made the same modification to /etc/ssh/sshd_config on my Intrepid
test server. No matter if PasswordAuthentication is set to on or off I
still get my motd. This both using password logins (when possible) as
well as pubkey login.
