Looks like the "various fixes found on the net" nuked your tomcat6-common 
package as well.
The "tomcat6 is not installed" message is emitted when 
/usr/share/tomcat6/bin/bootstrap.jar has been removed, and this is a file 
installed by tomcat6-common.

Tomcat6 is not packaged as a single package, it's composed of several
packages, including tomcat6-common.

Try:
sudo apt-get purge tomcat6 tomcat6-common tomcat6-admin
sudo apt-get install tomcat6 tomcat6-admin

In all cases, not a bug in tomcat6.
