Same behaviour for Lucid (nothing happens or gnome error message looks
like a timeout issue but is not always shown). A simple mount -t smbf
mount the DFS share and can go deep inside ...
Does gnome really use smbfs to mount smb files ?

Could you check out a Lucid system (Alpha3 LiveCd, for example) and see if you
can reproduce the issue ? there were lots of regressions in 3.4.0, but most are
believed to be fixed in 3.4.5...
