Hello Dave,
I am using ubuntu from the very beginning and have already cleared the
browser cache and have even tried with chromium but nothing changes. If
I just type http://localhost I'll get a white page

I have restarted apache2 with
sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 force-reload
and I have even restarted the computer itself but nothing changes.

@Jörg, I have previously seen situations where the browser/client caches
the PHP source. Can i suggest you try clearing your browser cache,
and/or trying from a different computer?
