This seems to be an issue related to dpkg rather than mysql given the
location of the error message. Are other packages affected too?

Nope, this has been the only package affected and has only occurred
since the update from 10.04 to 10.10 (although I can't quite understand
why apport seems to think I'm using 9.10)
