On intrepid I just experienced this, but it went away after resetting
the password. Not sure how the password was initially set, since I'm
virtual hosted on linode.com and the password was initially set through
the linode web gui. After I reset the password at the command line with

No, I can't try it again: I don't have linode anymore, and I don't
have any spare computers to do a fresh install on.
