Some more information about running Muse.
I tried Muse on my laptop that has also Ubuntu studio installed in it.
Using the integrated sound card, Muse with Fluidsynth and Edirol UM-1
USB midi interface everything works like a charm.
I wonder if the problems running Muse on my desktop has a

Locate the module names of your sound cards with:
less /proc/asound/modules
example output:

In /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base replace:
install sound-slot-
I don't know if this is the correct solution, but if you have disabled
the on board card already, then you could (having installed alsatools)
try sudo alsaconf
That should remove the references to the disabled card.
