Morning All, I have reinstalled completely from scratch. The same problem with /build/buildd/linux-rt-2.6.28/arch/x86/kernel/signal_32.c still exists. This is probably why the system was unable to recover earlier. Please note that initial reference from yesterday to dpkg was a red herring.

This is a known bug and there is bug lodged here. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-rt/+bug/363478/ I have appended the details below to the bug report. Since the UbuntuStudio is unstable on my notebook then I shall use the non-realtime kernel for the timebeing, and shall consider
