Morning All,
I have reinstalled completely from scratch. The same problem with
/build/buildd/linux-rt-2.6.28/arch/x86/kernel/signal_32.c still exists.
This is probably why the system was unable to recover earlier. Please note
that initial reference from yesterday to dpkg was a red herring.
This is a known bug and there is bug lodged here.

I have appended the details below to the bug report.
Since the UbuntuStudio is unstable on my notebook then I shall use the
non-realtime kernel for the timebeing, and shall consider

A shame because I am really impressed with the visual layout of Studio.
Gnome looks very nice on it. Is there a easy way to have the same
UbuntuStudio

One option is use 64Studio 3.0 Beta - it uses Ubuntu 8.04 as a base
system, but has own kernel. So you can use Ubuntu Studio theme on 64Studio.
