I respond to myself: Apparently the 2.6.17 (or older) kernels have a /proc/acpi/alarm interface: date -d "5 minutes" +"%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S" > /proc/acpi/alarm or date -d "7 hours" +"%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S" > /proc/acpi/alarm then use whatever is needed to send the computer to suspend: /etc/acpi/sleep.
