Have a look at the Ubuntu Laptop testing Wiki at

and see if your laptop is listed.
BTW I had success with older laptops using Xubuntu.

I believe the existing configuration was mplayer (plugin) with FF but
from my present experiences I am only getting any success at all after
removing mplayer, (re) installing realplayer
