I experienced the same problem -- run chkdsk /f (or is it (-f) in windows.
this is a ubuntu security feature because it has to resize a windows
partition, it needs to ensure it wont move half the windows folder to ext4
or something like that.
SOLUTION: boot into windows run chkdsk /f , restart
Run Scan Disk in Windows and then try the Ubuntu installer again.
If that doesn't make any difference then heres a tutorial video I made on
using the Manual Partition Editor in Ubuntu Installer

I ran chkdsk /f on all partitions on the drive that Windows understands,
and still no luck with the Ubuntu installer detecting them.
I checked in GParted and the entire drive shows as unallocated. I guess
this means there's some serious error somewhere on my disk?
I'll start backing up some

Is there any way you can view the SMART data? There are tools for
Windows as well as Ubuntu that can do the SMART tests.
I gave TestDisk a go (as recommended by a message in GParted) and I got a
message saying that space conflicts between two of my partitions. Could
this be what the problem is? Does anybody know how to fix that?
Here's the output from TestDisk on pastebin: http://pastebin.com/KVrPsgrN

If gparted sees only unallocated space, I
Hmm, okay. I'll try and get hold of another disk to back everything up.
I believe this was indeed Microsoft's fault, I recently re-installed
Windows 7, before which I had no problems with the partition table.
I don't think it was anything on the original installation, I partitioned
and installed

Okay, I've uploaded the output of sudo fdisk -l on pastebin, here:
http://pastebin.com/Gz8Lfnts
As far as I can see the partitions are all found correctly there.
Also, screenshots of the installer uploaded on imgur:
