I personally would prefer the venue not to be a pub. A community setting
would be more appropriate. I would like the launch to promote
meaningfully and not just be a party

get together is the way to go. I doubt there will be anyone attending
to promote to - the attendees are going to be there for the specific
reason that they are Ubuntu users.
I'd attend anywhere, if I'm around, but a pub would be extra-specially nice.

I agree with a pub, as we could all meet and get a drink, plus there
will be bar snacks to eat. Nice and sociable.
Also, I recently discovered a spindle of blank CDs on my shelf I'll
never use that I could bring along to burn copies for people.
