Hi folks,
Well I've decided to get the kids an 80GB PS3 for Christmas. Now being
the geeky type I am hoping to install Ubuntu on the PS3 as well. I've
been reading some installation guides to prepare myself for the install
but there is one thing I'm not sure about...
Now I know the PS3
Hi Rob,
After installing Ubuntu by default you will get the kboot bootloader. From
here if you want to boot the game os, its just a mater of typing game or a
command similar to that, the kboot bootloader screen documents it and that
boots you into the PS3 and makes that default until you change it

The PS3 is perfectly powerful enouugh for playing HD videos, but they

work. As far as I know, you have full access to the CPU, but graphics
and BR are a no-go. Format a hard drive with Fat 32, i think

I'm still tempted to go down the PS3 route, although I may just put
together an old PC with a newer NVidia graphics card for media playback
(other than Bluray).
I use an acer aspire revo 3600 for this. 1.6GHz Atom + nVidia ION GPU.
Plays HD stuff fine.

Cheers,

Al,
What sort of wattage does the Revo pull when it's idling?
I'm thinking about using one as server to replace my current Viglen,
which is good from an electricity point of view but
it limits the
graphics hardware and memory, so I'm wondering if I'd possibly be better
of getting a standalone Bluray player (which are now pretty cheap) and
also something like an Atom/ION based PC for media playback?
Is anyone on here running Ubuntu on the PS3?

I'm not sure what to do though. I mean at the moment I play HD stuff on
the wife's PC running Windows 7 which is plugged into the TV. It's not
ideal (i.e. no remote, I have to use the mouse) but it works.
Now I want to get a Bluray player, and I was planning
Installing ubuntu on a ps3 or xbox360 sounds like a great way forward. I
would buy a console with ubuntu installed.

Hello, Rob.
I was quite keen to run Ubuntu on a PS3 too until I found out about the
*severe* memory constraints of this computer: The main CPU can only
access 256MiB of the *maximum* 512MiB RAM that can be installed, but the
