Have you checked the log files e.g. /var/log/messages to see if it
indicates that the USB devices get unplugged or anything similar when
you cannot input anything?

I have just booted the PC for the first time in 24 hours running Ubuntu
12.04 and the keyboard and mouse buttons behave as they should. CPU

machine running to see what happens.
