This could be video driver/metacity/xorg related - I'm not sure at this
point.
Anyhow, firing up inkscape and just resizing the window for a minute
pushes Xorgs appparent memory use up by about 10MB.
Closing inkscape doesn't release the memory.
Any tips on this? With NoAccel I sure can get to KDE and even the
resolution is right. But the performance is terrible! In Firefox
scrolling a page is sluggish and irritating, videos can't be played due
to the speed and glxgears gives 50FPS! It is unusable! Any ways to
increase the performance?

I have resolved this. Yeah, it surprised me too. I had to completely
purge all of nvidia-glx and associated components from my system. This
is how I did it.
Shut down gdm, or kdm if appropriate
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
at black screen, go to login
ctrl + alt + f1
login at this

please have them purge their old nvidia drivers, then update.

I try to cherry-pick the bit 17 swizzling patch, it looks like a proper
solution for this issue, but lots of conflict when I merge to current
Jaunty tree, I check for the upstream and find out that I need to pull

XAA does seem to eliminate the freezes -- I've been running for several
days without a problem.
Unfortunately it also seems to eliminate opengl -- at least, google earth warns
at startup that it's running in opengl software emulation. And glxinfo now says
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project
