noticed that I can open video by using the command line to specify an
input file.

Please be aware that Leann closed this bug because I suggested to him
doing so in IRC. He is absolutely right, the bug has come into such a
state that is really impossible to fix. There are several similar, yet

I can confirm this behavior is present in Jaunty on a Macbook Pro 1,2.
The internal keyboard remembers its state, but external ones will lose
any mappings upon unplugging and replugging.
