It seems with tha latest (ubuntu3) release of package the problem is
disappeard (at least to my machine). Installing with package manager or
restricted hw manager works well in case of fglrx driver. Someone should
test what if when the one upgrade form 9.04. I can't try it again :o)

Yes, I also get the problem if I start X without an /etc/X11/xorg.conf
file (ie just using the open-source nv driver), so it is independent of
nvidia or fglrx.

If I right click something like the panel, the flickering stops after
the context menu appears, but it could sometimes make the gnome settings
deamon crash.

downgraded everything but drm-modules-source from xorg-edgers to mesa
7.6.0-1ubuntu2 and then recompiled libgl1-mesa-dri with some troubles to
enable r600 support. In the end it turned out well and the fix does seem
