I've just discovered something interesting, after some time
experimenting in Karmic -- somehow, I managed to catch a line about
"failed to connect to acpid" just before the crash.
Apparently, the acpi-services part of the fglrx driver explicitly
depends on having acpid up and running by the time X
Adding Xorg.0.log, since ubuntu-bug didn't do it automatically.
I also note that although I'm running a gnome-shell/mutter from a PPA,
this also occurs with the gnome-shell/mutter in karmic, and with
karmic's default metacity and totem.

I had the same problem too, when installing kubuntu-desktop on top of Ubuntu.
It seems to be fixed by running:
sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme
and selecting "/usr/share/icons/DMZ-White/cursor.theme" (it was 7 in my
machine)
