I'm running into a similar problem with Karmic and the 855GM chipset.

I just remembered that I originally tested a "retro" (Jaunty, I think) version
of xserver-xorg-video-intel as one of my first experiments, and it locked up
rapidly (see original report at the top of this thread). So maybe there's not
much point in getting older versions of Brian's packages
I added Brian's PPA to my sources.list and installed the current
versions of the packages. Unfortunately, I got the lock-up after only a
few minutes.
Software versions are:

I tried building the driver with the patch on the Gnome version of
Ubuntu alpha-1, and the screen went blank after booting. I'm not home
to try logging in with ssh, but when I am, I'll try installing the
binary driver and continue on ... I won't have time to try xubuntu

I had the same issue with HP Compaq 6720s notebook, Intel GM965/GL960 VGA card.

I am experiencing the bug, too. Installing latest updates on Kubuntu 10.04
prevents the X-server from starting.
System is an Intel Core2Duo P7450; 4 GB RAM; Ati Radeon Mobility 4530 HD.

Here's my lshal.out. and lsusb. I have a eTurboTouch screen (in Medion
Akoya P4010) and tried to use the TurboTouch (Linux) drivers from their
site. Still no touch response whatsoever.

I have now tested the new official nvidia drivers
(nvidia-current_190.53-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb) you uploaded.
I can confirm they work OK.
They work with both xserver versions (the older 1.7.3.902-1ubuntu1 and newer
1.7.3.902-1ubuntu2).

Sorry, but there is NO WAY to do such operations when booting on a CD LIVE
engraved from the last .ISO file.
The display still returns on splash screen every 2 seconds and there is no
possibility to access a console with the keyboard.
I whish this issue will be settled within Kubuntu 10.04.

tried downgrading a few (by manually downloading debs and installing all
at once with dpkg -i)
First downgrading the xorg-server-* packages to 7.5~3ubuntu4 did not
help.

Before installing new official nvidia drivers (not yet in repos), I updated my
lucid first.
I have now nvidia drivers installed from sevenmachines PPA (195.22-0ubuntu0).
After updating X packages to
- x11-common (7.5+1ubuntu1)
- x11-xserver-utils (7.5+1ubuntu1)
- xkb-data (1.7-1ubuntu2)
@nomnex: On my Amilo Xi 3650 I can turn off »Hybrid Graphics« in the BIOS and
select which device to use. Both of them work perfectly.
If »Hybrid Graphics« is enabled, you can switch graphic cards by pressing a
button (Windows). Everything but the splash screen works if I boot Ubuntu,

i am having this problem on my laptop. I can only run ubuntu in safe
grafic mode.
