I am running a HP NC6220 also with the i915 driver on Ubuntu Karmic
9.10. For me there are similar problems as the ones above. After opening
the lid again (or only touching the screen off sensor which happens a
lot with this laptop model) the screen flickers insanely and the mouse
moves

then configure your xorg.conf with:

I tried that deb package but it complained about not finding rt73 module. I
tried to install that module, but had no luck.
So I removed the module, reactivated the other one (nvidia off).
I removed everything about nvidia using synaptic, and when I have booted up
this morning... I have

nvidia-settings and or of the nvidia driver) left
/usr/share/man/man1/nvidia-smi.1.gz and /usr/bin/nvidia-smi, which the nvidia
packages cannot overwrite.

the nouveau package appears to have the same weird dependency which has
prevented installation and thus testing since forever. Any chance we
could get that fixed as well?
There was an open bug on that issue but I believe it was closed as a dup

I had the same bug on my Inspiron 1525 laptop with an Intel GM965/GL960 card.
I am suspicious that this is due to the Virtual screen size in the graphics
card being set to 8192x8192
Previously I have always set this to a maximum of 2048x2048 or less in
xorg.conf, to prevent running out of memory

Hate to add a 'me, too' to this, but it is frustrating that it has been
almost a year since I first started looking for a real solution to this
problem and here I sit unable to remote in to my machine. Is there a
solution to this in the works, or is it just going to be left to the
affected users
I think the solution is to wait for X.org 7.5 on Lucid Lynx as said on

I can also confirm I had this problem on a ASUS M3N-H/HDMI with a fresh
install of Ubuntu 9.10 and the most recent NVIDIA drivers. However,
disabling desktop effects resolved this issue for me.

7.5 bug and Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 had X.org buggy. Nothing new. If Debian
Squeeze has X.org 7.4 or 7.5 of course the bug is not present, like
Ubuntu 10.04.

I want to mention that the system, other than the video, does stay
responsive when this situation occurs. I see the render error and GPU
hung error in my logs and the console becomes useless because there is

i'm experiencing what i think is a similar a black/blank screen in
karmic after the ubuntu boot logo is finished on a dell studio xps 1340
laptop running a nvidia 9400m (+ 9200m but doesn't run due to no nvidia
hybrid sli support) with karmic 64-bit. It happened after the reboot
after installing
System is stable with no effects on, screen saver off. Any 3D starts
the freeze issue and soon requires hard reset. Before total freeze,
navigation slows with new windows reverting to a code pattern listing in
panes like corruption.

If we try to switch user when another user is logged in , the current user
session gets screwed and the cursor displayed on a vt with text.

I verified that the crash/freeze occurs also when Gnome-Do is not
running. I initially suspected it could be the cause since the symptom
appeared shortly after I started using Gnome-Do, but today it happened
without it.
Also, this also happens when the computer is not idle for an extended
time.
Reverted nanog's change status: Confirmed → New since he concluded
that he had a different bug.
