udev & gdm was not enough.

With Lucid Alpha 3 things have got worse. Xorg crashes each time the
LiveCD "ubuntu" user tries to log-in, resulting in the user returning to
the standard GDM log-in screen. Manual attempts to log-in result in the
same Xorg crash and restart of GDM. There appear to be a lot of similar

I have downgraded to nvidia 173.14.22 and that gets rid of the corrupted
graphics. I still have to switch between virtual consoles until I can
eventually activate the display.
