Thanks. I was able to get the drivers to work by downloading the .deb,
removing all nvidia related packages (sudo apt-get purge nvidia) and
then installing the deb. This was all done in RECOVERY MODE!!! (Hold
shift while booting your computer to get into grub to select recovery
mode.)

Problem solved. See bug 538524. Problem is traced to plymouth splash screen
