Sorry for the inconvenience of the tarball; I had to report this bug
collecting this information by hand, rather than using the ubuntu tool.
The interface only allows 1 file at a time, thus this seemed the most
convenient way to file a bug with all the relevant information already

It just happened again, but this time I tried Dmitry V Shurupov's
workaround. It didn't work (I'm not using a PS/2 mouse), but what did
work was removing and re-inserting the driver for my wireless
keyboard/mouse (hid_logitech). I only had to do it once and sure enough
everything was back to normal

@hackeron, Lucida Sans does not seem to be part of a default Lucid
Install and it's not a mono font. Deja Vu Sans Mono seems a better
candidate to fix that. I am not even sure the font should be hardcoded,
but should rather use the system's defaults.

Just tried using xbacklight on the command line. It is not able to
adjust the brightness onscreen either, although it seems to think it is

There is no way to re-enable DRI in the existing patch. However, since
it seems that none of the work arounds we have been able to try fix it
for everyone - and indeed all seem to introduce equally serious problems
for a different set of people - we'll be dropping the DRI disablement
patch before

Nice find Daniel. My xorg.conf (attached above) which reproduces the
bug does not use the old screen ID syntax, but instead uses the new
standard "DVI-I-x" where x is the videocard port.
