I have the same problem with a Viglen P4 desktop. It crashed every time
I started VirtualBox. I tried the ppa, and things are slightly better
now (I can run VirtualBox), but I still get a crash or freeze every once
in a while.

I put the disk in, install it in windows, reboot, black for a long time as it
instills ubuntu, then reboot's again, then black screen the hole time, stop's
loading but still a black screen, So I press Power
@thsths - Unless you have Intel 945 graphics you have a different
problem and should file a new bug. Even if you have Intel 945 graphics
the fact that your crash is triggered by starting VirtualBox also
suggests that you have a different problem and should file a new bug.

I have a dual monitor running off Geforce 8600 GT video card. The device

I can reproduce the problem 100% by selecting a particular menu in mythtv.

I've installed the Edubuntu 10.04 on my PC (its configuration is

Had enough running time now to consider the issue closed, my best guess
is that it must have been some kind of firmware issue that was fixed by
the newer linux-firmware package, since I seem to be the only one that
was affected, changing the status of the bug.

I think I found what does it on my machine.
I did a fresh install and rather than my usual mods I only installed the
kubuntu restricted extras package and firefox. I'd normally switch the
network manager with wicd but I left this out. One other package I had
before was Skype Beta 2.1.0.81-1

I don't know if it's the right way to do it, but the following worked for me.
I opened the xkb/symbols/altwin file, and replaced the line:
key RALT { type[Group1] = TWO_LEVEL;
symbols[Group1] = [ Alt_R, Meta_R ] };
by:
key RALT { type[Group1] = ONE_LEVEL;
symbols[Group1]
Sadly have to report that I have issues with Lucid and my Radeon 7500.
Randomly the system goes black, shows some quick text (the only part I have
caught says something like checking battery state) and I am prompted to log
back in.
Also, when booting up, the splash screen is in funky (maybe

assume this updated me to 0ubuntu3, now X doesn't initialise and I get
the error described. Downgrading to 0ubuntu2 fixes it...
