Solved the problem following these instructions:
This must be done on both the boot command line and in the module
configuration.
/etc/default/grub:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset"
/etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf
options radeon modeset=0
In other words, as root, edit the file /etc/default/grub b

After I activate a proprietary NVidia driver (the card is GeForce
9800GT) I observe that some window resizing effects cease working. In
particular toggling vertical and horizontal maximisation does not work.
I can only one time maximise the window and can
Apart from a couple of essentially cosmetic issues which I've pointed
out to Chase, I think this looks sane.

I ran the recovery mode for that kernel and was able to choose the failsafe
video option.
Then I chose to reconfigure graphics and setup a new configuration.
Finally restarted X and was into a desktop environment again.
Then I was able to restore the old xorg.conf that was replaced bu the

Public bug reported:
graphics are low after starting ubuntu. The error about the package was
reported twice during previous week.
ProblemType: Package
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04
Package: fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu4
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-24.39-generic 2.6.32.15+drm33.5
Uname: Linux 2.6
I did install the new version but it seems that it does not fix the
problems when needing i915.modeset=1
The installation was a little strange but in the end it seems that I
have:
xserver-xorg-video-intel
2:2.12.0+legacy20100802-0~raof1~lucid
but the output from Xorg -version looks like
X.Org X
Hi,
Since I flashed my bios from 1.20 to 1.25 (to solve battery problem) I
not saw the error. 6 days without the error (before I get the error 1-2
times a day)...
