I can only provide info from a working install of Kubuntu 10.04, since
10.10 is pretty much unusable, had to reinstall Lucid to be able to send
any kind of report, since w3m (text-based web browser) does not allow me
to login in Launchpad.

Yes :) I did so only as a workaround, but obviously that was not stable.
I also just discovered that the same crashes can now occur even with a

I believe I suffer from this, or a similar bug, on a Toshiba Tecra 9100
with an S3 Supersavage IX/C on 10.04 Lucid x86. Playback in totem shows
no video, only sound in the case of playing an flv file. If playing an
avi or mp4, a variety of differently coloured lines are shown, with
sound as normal.
I just noticed there is a slightly cleaner approach to the source
manipulation fu:

When i wake my laptop from suspend mode i get a multicolor screen, no mouse
cursor, etc visible. Only colors.
Cant switch to virtual consoles, only a hard reboot can help.
With the proprietary nvidia drivers this does not occur
