@oblong: What adding the “modetest” option to i915 is doing is causing
an error which prevents it from loading - the module doesn't recognise
that option, so fails to load.
This ends up in the X server selecting a different driver, probably
vesa, which won't have the same problems the intel

Same problem here using a GeForce3 Ti 500. Boot works fine with kernel
2.6.32-25 left over from lucid upgrade; however, with kernel 2.6.35-22 X
does not start and system hangs at the boot splash screen.

NVIDIA X Server Settings Forgets Screen
I have a GTX 470 and just updated to the latest version via update-
manager and everything seems to be fixed by the 260.19.06 driver update!

My understanding is the Intel 945 chips have a 2048 horizontal maximum pixel
limit; it can push 4096 pixels with a load of things disabled, but that's
probably not a good idea; so 2048 is the maximum practical.

laptop mouse freezes after wake up from suspend. but
I am getting better performance but I am still seeing slightly elevated
CPU usage. I would think this version of the driver must make it to
Maverick.

This doesn't sound at all like a graphics driver bug, but rather a
communication problem between the various XFCE components. The driver
does not control the appearance of fonts or icons, but simply processes
the drawing requests sent to it by applications. Does the problem still
occur with the
Installed customized Ubuntu image from Stephen Glasenhardt
(http://files.yoschi.cc/glasen/ubuntu-10.04.1-855gm-desktop-i386.iso)
with KMS enabled and updated Intel drivers. However, whenever some video
playback is started (In VLC, webpage,etc..), the system freezes, and
only hard reset helps.
