Public bug reported:
I'm not able to start the X server after installing the nvidia-current
drivers (via jockey) on clean Kubuntu 10.10 installation. There is only
a terminal login prompt after system boot and I have to delete
/etc/X11/xorg.conf and run startx to start the X server. Unfortunately

Also affected by this. However, X loads after about 2-3 minutes at the login
prompt.
At the moment I have a znote 6625 with 8600m gt on linux mint 10.10 Gnome
32-bit RC.

I think this is probably a bug with the Intel Audio. The original poster
had that too. There have also been other problems with it in the past.
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio
Controller (listed as Realtek ALC888 in alsamixer)
Gigabyte EX58-UD3R, i7 920
I am sorry but downgrading to gdm 2.30.0-0ubuntu5 didn't resolve the problem.
The error is still present.
My case most likely is following :
1. the bug occurs - [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an
infinite loop.
2. overheating of nVidia Corporation G86 [GeForce 8600M GS]
Temporarily solution
Before NVIDIA drivers installation do:
sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg-core
sudo sed -i 's/maverick/lucid/g' /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-core
echo xserver-xorg-core hold | sudo dpkg --set-selections
sudo sed -i

@Barry Grumbine.
I found that removing glClear(GL_COLOR_BUFFER_BIT); from wm_window.c fixes it
and blender starts fine.
Once blender is started this can be called again for new windows.
looking into it further, will try fix for the next beta.

To clarify, I had no problem on the fresh install of Beta and Release
Candidate. I wonder if this is the result of a bad upgrade.
