I could fix prevent kdm from crashing by installing "xfce4" and setting the

- x-session-manager to /usr/bin/startkde

What a persistent bug! I'm in Ubuntu 10.4 and it is still there:
when pressing the dot in the numeric keypad, I get Comma. That's pretty
much consistent in several machines with ABNT2 keyboards.

I've run a 'synclient ClickFinger3=1' command as well as editing the
.conf.
I'm not exactly savvy enough to check if the bug is fixed but I've not
had any of the middle click madness since so it seems to me you need
both the command and the .conf edit.
