Okay, I'm out of ideas.
I did some research and it appears this bug is more widespread than I
previously thought. It would seem there is a problem in the maverick
kernel that prevents some nvidia drivers from loading according to
certain reports. I guess my best bet is to wait for a kernel fix.
I found the same problem with an Aleutia E2 (VIA Eden CX700/VX700,
openchrome), lucid, LTSP thin client.
It appears to be caused by this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-session/+bug/673072
Note that it usually, but not always, fails to log in from ldm on the
LTSP client. The
I have the same problem with a Radeon RV250 card. Non-static icons are
not displayed on the open GL dock on start-up. When I then change the
icon size in the docks setting, all icons are displayed correctly till
the end of the session.

About the BUG: soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 61s!, I've realized that
it occurs every time I unplug the VGA port (e.g. some projector) and
shutdown after. BUT, if I open the gnome-display-properties and detect
monitors BEFORE shutting-down, the lockup bug doesn't occur.
