I have fixed it (I hope) by updating to 260.19.21 from
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates
My last post wasn't very helpful (perhaps because my firefox was so slow).
I am on Ubuntu 10.10 x64 with 3 monitors on 2 Nvidia 8600s using xinerama.
I was using very old nvidia/xorg

Hello here,
on my laptop Asus UL30VT same problems: NVRM: os_raise_smp_barrier(), invalid
context!
The laptop has two graphiccards, but i use only the nvidia
I can't see any freez, i only get the message above every few seconds.

I have just unbricked my 8400GS computer.
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-256.53.run worked for me.
Followed the instructions from Marc-Antoine Ruel above.
If that's not working, you may want to try changing the Device section in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf from
Driver nvidia
to
Driver vesa

Hello people, i´m here to report my findings lately:
Having been able to enter ubuntu in failsafe x, I updated the entire system,
and also as the link I said before on askubuntu showed, I installed the nvidia
drivers, first the usual way, later manually, downloading from nvidia site the
drivers
Yeah i hope it can be a new start even only for 2D official support.
Ubuntu will got more love 3
