Any news? I have posted this bug on Oct 18th, 2010 and still can't find
a fix, as well as I have found the same problem in other distros like
Arch Linux, Chakra Linux (a derivate of Arch), Open Suse and a couple
more. It would be great to find a solution to this annoying problem, a
Geforce 8400GS i
A workaround to this problem is to open a terminal and:
$ unset LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT
then you'll have:
$ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes
GL_EXT_copy_buffer, GL_EXT_copy_texture, GL_EXT_direct_state_access,
you can then use same shell to launch wine application:
$ wine applicat

Sounds like a KMS bug. Kernel drm needs to quirk off the phantom
output.
You will need to re-test this against natty. Make sure to run `apport-
collect 690552` to collect info the developers will require before they
can investigate the bug.

Just finally - While can demonstrate here identically of 2 different but not
uncommon hardwares, this definitely begs further confirmation.
If valid, based on the progression so far as seen here, there doesn't seem any
reason to take action, maybe better to wait for next set of compiz update(s)
