Oh, my mistake I suppose. I mistakenly thought that running the system from the Ubuntu USB key was like running an installed system on a key and not in live mode. I thought that running from a USB key, unlike what happens when you run live from a CD-ROM, you could save changes to your environment.

Confirm repeated with Xubuntu 10.10 on Toshiba Tecra 8200 (Trident CyberBlade/XP). Xorg -configure segfaults, which may explain default to 800x600. Attached Xorg.99.log shows the backtrace after failing to open /dev/fb0. Attached xorg.conf restores the correct default and choice of resolutions.
