I just want to say that I observe exactly the same behaviour as Xake.
And it is really sad that after such a long time the bug is still
present. But thanks to Xake for trying out so many options and keeping
the bug alive (and valid).

I also have this problem with my Lenovo W510 (i7, nvidia graphics, SSD) and
Ubuntu 10.10.
Using kdm instead of gdm seems to work for me.
