I've posted on this before.
I was getting black screen freezes first on ubuntu, then on pclinuxos.
Sometimes stable for up to a day - sometimes crashed 3/4 times in a day.
The issue appears to be finally resolved - I just installed new Debian release
squeeze a couple of days back. No crashsince.
Tried the kernel above, but issue still persist, and I do not have any
propretary driver installed.

I agree this is a show stopper for a lot of people. I have never had any
issues with my system using NVIDIA until I switched my setup to how I
described above. Before that I was using a VGA to DVI converter but then
i noticed the weight of the VGA plug was pulling down on the port and I
couldn't
Catalyst 11.2 may have worked with earlier 2.6.38 RCs, but broke with
later RCs and the final versions due to the renaming of
acquire/release_console_sem to console_lock/unlock. That said, the
kernel compatibility is fixed by a small patch. The Xserver is the
bigger problem.

I installed the drivers from AMD. During the installation was an error with
dkms.
Version from the repository gives the following error in the file Xorg.0.log:
[ 222.354] (EE) Failed to load module fglrx (module does not exist,
0)

libgl1-mesa-dri contains many dri drivers in it (including both intel
and radeon ones), nouveau is contained in libgl1-mesa-dri-experiemental
which is why it's not a dependency for libgl1-mesa-dri.

If you have the same error with nouveau, then it's more likely to be
something with the kernel rather than X. The kernel is what controls
the display of the text consoles.

Seems pretty clear at this point it's a bug in the kernel's radeon drm
driver rather than the X driver.
Maybe try removing vesafb from the kernel, or try apw's purple ppa,
which has a proposed fix for the vesafb conflict.

Hmm, that's too bad, thanks for reporting back.
I notice you're running virtualbox (there's mention of the vbox video
drivers). I wonder if those are causing some sort of conflict?
