I figured out that this problem was caused by no ACPI support.
To enable suspend, hibernation, screen saver and system shut-down you will have
to force ACPI by parsing "acpi=force" to the kernel. To do that edit
/etc/grub.d/10_linux and:

a Radeon X1600. I tried the radeon.modeset=0 boot option which stopped

Screen flicker
I completely agree with hackel comment #68.
This is pathetic! We are less than 1 month away from the offcial release
of Natty Narwhal (11.04) and we still have a critical bug, reported
several months ago, NOT fixed, preventing MANY people to upgrade from
10.04 --> 10.10. I too had to go trough man
Also affects Natty development branch on MacBook Pro. Hangs on splash
screen, without any fallback to the nv or nouveau or any other video
driver. Works fine again when the driver file is put back where it
belongs.

I confirm the same issue, with Maverick 64bit on my Laptop Hp Touchsmart Tm2.
It happens not every time, but randomly. For me, not only while trying tu
suspend, but also when trying to shutdown. It shuts down eventually, but need
near 3 or 4 minutes.
