I had to completely remove the fglrx, removed xorg.conf, rebootet with
opensource radeon driver, and than I did a fresh install with jockey,
this solved the problem.
It looks like a problem with the upgrade procedure, the fglrx kernel
module was not build

That's a pretty impressive workaround. I also increased from 64 to
128Mb, and that allows me to run 7 maximised windows before I strike the
problem, using the "current" driver. That is way over double the
previous best. My machine has the GEForce 6150.

And here is the patch for 2.6.35, compatible with maverick. I forgot to
say above that the 2.6.38 works on natty. Both of these are the latest
that are being testing upstream on bugzilla.kernel.org for anybody
having trouble getting it from there.
These work quite well for me on my Samsung NF210.
Patch for 2.6.38 attached. To build the module, here's what I did:
- ensure you have the kernel sources and kernel headers for 2.6.38
- cd into the directory with the source files elantech.c and elantech.h (I
believe it's ends with drivers/input/mouse in the source tree)
- to patch, do "patch < 01
..although I do mean 'functional system' in the sense that it's
functional, but limited. The default interface (Unity) won't work with
software rendering, and therefore the "Ubuntu Classic" interface must be
used. But this is by far not ideal, and a fix is definitely required.

i re installed ubuntu 10.10 did not make another attempt to re install
that proprietary driver again.
Now I am coming back with the same problem in ubuntu 11.04. the issue
here is lil diffrent. I made a fresh install

When watching a video in Totem/VLC/xine, the image contains a horizonal
displacement. The displacement edge drifts slowly over the image. If I
switch off Xv (with gstreamer-properties) the problem vanishs (but the
frame rate drops down, too).

Well, no, the idea I had was totally not viable as a workaround. I was
thinking of installing or creating a package of the older radeonhd
drivers (which do work) for Natty, but but they have an older ABI and
haven't been updated because they're being phased out. Looks like the
