This bug has plagued me for a year now since I got my laptop. Upgrading
to the 3.4-rc5 kernel from the ubuntu kernel packages, as this comment
thread suggested, has fixed it. I have so far seen zero adverse effects,
and only good ones, in that games play now without me waiting for the
inevitable
I have had the same problem since 11.10. The problem occures on two
seperate machines (now) running 12.04 and both of them have a screen
size of 2560x1440.
I would think that the above metioned iMac runs at a screen size
similar.

port the xorg-edgers nvidia patch to quantal.
You're right about the headers and a more correct workaround would
have been to copy system.h from a 3.2 kernel, Anyway this proposed
workaround works too.

windowmanager+gdm (no unity). windowmanager uses alt+1alt+9 key

I believe this is due to the HUD trigger being mapped to (left) Alt. Try
disabling it from ccsm (compizconfig-settings-manager, desktop - unity
plugin; key to show the HUD) if it changes the behaviour.

I have a similar bug : I have french and french alternative, and I can't switch
between them any more after updating to 12.04.
When I select french alternative, I am in fact still using the french layout.
I can't use nouveau because the fonts are crappy on my setup.
I switched to version current-updates of the nv driver, and found it to
be more stable (but to still have the problem.) I then switched to
Ubuntu 2d, and so far haven't had the issue reoccur.

I can't boot when i plug my dock with the video 1 dvi output to my DELL
