@Andre Come on, I am a regular user. I have no idea how to switch kernels. I might find it on google, but I am not aware of consequences and if something goes wrong I won't be able to roll back. If the solution works, maybe it could be patched as a system update so that everyone can apply it

Tomasz Ostrowski see #328 above, I am not new to computers but a novice to Linux and I was able to do it. As a side benefit I am now confident using Synaptic Package manager, It was the last thing I installed after removing Ubuntu Software Center. I also did a system image using ReDO backup

So I used to have complete system freezes as well. I used to think it was tied to video card drivers, but then after several complete reinstalls of Ubuntu 12.04 I found the cause of the problem, at least for me. I run a 64 bit AMD (1.6 dual core) laptop with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 dual
